TOCFL Band C Grammar: The Written-Register Patterns That Determine Your Reading Score
Which 書面語 grammar patterns control your TOCFL Band C reading score, how they are tested, and which Dangdai books introduce each one.
Most Band C candidates fail reading comprehension the same way. They know the vocabulary. They can parse individual sentences. Then they hit a long newspaper editorial or academic excerpt, and somewhere in the middle — around the third or fourth 書面語 connective — the logical thread breaks. They guess.
The problem is not vocabulary size. It is grammar pattern recognition in a register you do not hear spoken aloud. Band C reading passages are assembled from 書面語 (shūmiànyǔ) — the formal written register of academic prose, editorial journalism, and official documents. The grammar that holds these passages together is structurally distinct from the paired connectives you mastered at Band B. This guide covers the specific patterns that appear in TOCFL Band C reading sections, where each one is introduced in the Dangdai series, and how the exam tests them.
Why Grammar Is the Hidden Variable at Band C
The TOCFL Band C reading section contains no explicit grammar questions. That is not because grammar stops mattering — it is because Band C tests grammar through comprehension, not through labelling.
A question at Level 5 might ask what position an author takes in paragraph two. The correct answer depends on whether you understood that 儘管…仍然 is a concession (the author is acknowledging the opposing view before countering it) rather than an endorsement. The vocabulary in that sentence was manageable. The grammar determined whether you read the paragraph correctly.
At Band B, the paired connectives — 即使…還是, 不管…都, 與其…不如 — controlled gap-fill scores. At Band C, the same logic applies across all of reading comprehension, but now the constructions are 書面語-specific, longer, and embedded in dense argument structures rather than isolated sentences.
Dangdai Book 5 and Book 6 introduce these patterns systematically. This article organises them by functional category rather than by book chapter, which is how you will encounter them on the exam.

Formal Causation: Beyond 因為…所以
At Band B, causal reasoning was expressed through 因為…所以. At Band C, this pattern is replaced by a family of written-register equivalents that restructure where the cause and effect appear in the sentence.
| Register | Pattern | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Spoken (Band A–B) | 因為…所以 | Cause then effect, clause boundary |
| Formal (Band C) | 由於…因此 | Cause clause, then effect clause |
| Formal (Band C) | 由於…導致 | Cause, then a negative or significant result |
| Formal (Band C) | 鑒於此… / 有鑒於此… | Given this…therefore (conclusion marker) |
由於…因此 compresses the subject-predicate structure of 因為 into a single fronted phrase:
由於經濟成長趨緩,許多企業因此縮減了招募規模。 Due to the slowdown in economic growth, many companies have consequently reduced their hiring scale.
由於…導致 signals that the outcome is consequential — often a problem or a significant change. 導致 (dǎozhì) carries more weight than 因此 and is reserved for non-trivial results.
由於長期缺乏睡眠,導致他的健康狀況逐漸惡化。 Due to long-term sleep deprivation, his health has gradually deteriorated.
Both appear throughout Dangdai Book 5 reading passages and in every Band C reading packet tested to date. In comprehension questions, these constructions signal where the author’s causal argument begins — the locus of their reasoning, not merely background.
Framing Constructions: The Skeleton of Academic Argument
Band C reading passages are argumentative. Before an author makes a claim, they frame it — specifying the scope, the perspective, or the conditions under which the claim applies. The framing constructions are the phrases that do this work.
就…而言 (as far as…is concerned / in terms of…)
就語言學習的角度而言,沉浸式環境的效果優於課堂教學。 From the perspective of language learning, immersive environments outperform classroom instruction.
在…方面 (in the area / dimension of…)
在文化保存方面,台灣的政策相對成功。 In terms of cultural preservation, Taiwan’s policies have been relatively successful.
就…來說 (speaking in terms of / from the standpoint of…)
就個人而言,這個決定代價很高;就社會而言,或許是必要的。 For the individual, this decision is costly; for society, it may be necessary.
Framing constructions matter for reading comprehension because they tell you how broadly or narrowly the author’s claim applies. A question that asks “what is the scope of the author’s argument?” is testing whether you parsed the 就…而言 or 在…方面 phrase correctly.
Concession at Written Register: 縱使, 儘管, 固然
The Band B concessive patterns — 雖然…但是 and 即使…還是 — continue appearing at Band C but now function as the simpler end of a longer spectrum.
儘管…仍然/還是 signals a strong concession: the result holds despite what would seem to be a compelling counter-pressure.
儘管各方批評不斷,政府仍然推行了這項政策。 Despite persistent criticism from all sides, the government still pushed through this policy.
縱使/縱然…也 is the more elevated equivalent of 即使, used in formal editorials and academic argument.
縱使條件再困難,也無法成為放棄的藉口。 Even if the conditions are ever more difficult, that cannot become an excuse to give up.
固然…但/然而 concedes a point before overturning it. 固然 acknowledges something is true, then pivots:
固然效率重要,然而過度追求效率往往犧牲了品質。 It is true that efficiency matters; however, excessive pursuit of efficiency often sacrifices quality.
In Band C reading passages, concessive patterns mark the structural pivot point in an argument — the moment the author acknowledges the opposing view before countering it. Identifying the concession tells you where the author’s real position begins.
Sequence and Escalation: 進而, 更何況, 乃至
Band C reading passages build arguments step by step. The escalation constructions signal each step.
進而 (and furthermore / which then leads to) marks a consequence that follows naturally from the previous point — usually an intensification:
這樣的制度不僅影響教育機會,進而加深了社會不平等。 Such a system not only affects educational opportunity, and further deepens social inequality.
更何況 (let alone / all the more so because) adds a further consideration that makes the prior point even more compelling:
連專業人士都感到困難,更何況是普通民眾? Even professionals find it difficult — let alone ordinary citizens?
乃至 (even up to / ranging as far as) extends a range to an extreme:
這個問題影響到個人、家庭,乃至整個社會。 This issue affects individuals, families, and even society as a whole.
These patterns appear in the later paragraphs of Band C reading passages, where the argument escalates toward its conclusion. Misreading them produces wrong answers on questions about author stance and argumentation.
Classical Particles in Formal Prose
Dangdai Book 6 systematises what Books 4 and 5 introduced gradually: classical particles functioning grammatically in modern formal Chinese. Two appear frequently in Band C reading passages.
之 as clause nominaliser
In academic and editorial writing, 之 converts a verb phrase or clause into a noun phrase:
維護社會公正之重要性,不應因政治壓力而被忽視。 The importance of maintaining social justice should not be overlooked due to political pressure.
This construction is distinct from the possessive 的 and from the fixed phrases (e.g., 之後, 之前) you learned earlier. When 之 appears mid-clause in a long noun phrase, it is nominalising what comes before it.
為…所 (formal passive)
Modern formal Chinese has a written-register passive beyond the spoken 被-construction:
這個觀念為學界所廣泛接受。 This view is widely accepted by the academic community.
為…所 appears in editorial writing and academic prose where 被 would sound too conversational. Recognising it prevents misreading the agent and object relationship in the sentence.
How the Reading Section Tests These Patterns
Band C reading comprehension does not present these constructions in isolation. They appear embedded in extended argument — often one construction following another across several sentences. The exam tests you at the level of the argument, not the sentence.
Three question types rely most directly on this grammar:
Author’s position questions require you to identify where the concession ends and the author’s real claim begins. 固然, 儘管, and 縱使 all introduce the part the author concedes. Everything after 然而, 仍然, or 卻 is what the author actually argues.
Inference questions ask what follows from the author’s reasoning. 由於…因此 and 由此可見 are the markers that signal where conclusions are drawn. If you cannot track the causal frame, the inference is invisible.
Scope questions ask what the author is specifically claiming. 就…而言 and 在…方面 constrain the claim. Without parsing the framing construction, the answer to “what does the author claim about X” will be broader than the text supports.
The Band C preparation guide covers the overall exam format and timeline. The practical work is here: review each construction in context, create cloze flashcards for the patterns that embed multiple clauses, and prioritise reading from formal Taiwanese media — the register is identical to what the exam draws from.
Official Band C mock exams are available on the TOCFL mock tests page. Each reading passage is a working example of these patterns used together.
