A Course in Contemporary Chinese (當代中文課程), commonly called Dangdai, is a Taiwan-focused Mandarin textbook series. This page is an independent editorial guide to Book 1—not a complete vocabulary reproduction, digital edition, or substitute for the textbook.
Zhong is an independent Traditional Chinese learning app with original lessons, readings, audio, and review tools. What Book 1 is designed to do
Book 1 establishes beginner communication: introductions, family, plans, transactions, food, locations, scheduling, transport, dates, and descriptions. The sequence moves from short social exchanges toward more flexible daily-life conversations. The most useful measure of progress is whether you can adapt a pattern to a new situation—not whether you can recite a fixed dialogue.

How to study the book effectively
Learn patterns, not just translations
For every new structure, create several original sentences with different subjects and settings. A learner who can only recognize the printed example has not yet made the pattern usable.
Keep listening and character practice together
Traditional Chinese study requires visual recognition, pronunciation, and tone awareness. Alternate listening, reading, writing, and production instead of spending an entire week on only one skill.

Use spaced review from the beginning
A small daily review habit is easier to sustain than a large catch-up session. Review older material before adding new material, and test recall rather than simply rereading notes.
Add real Taiwan input gradually
Textbook dialogues provide a controlled starting point. As comprehension grows, add announcements, menus, short videos, and conversations from Taiwan. The goal is to transfer controlled patterns into naturally paced language.
Book 1 and proficiency goals
Book 1 is a beginner foundation, not a guarantee of exam readiness or conversational fluency. CEFR and TOCFL comparisons are useful planning tools, but actual ability depends on retention, listening practice, character knowledge, and output. Treat the book’s progression as a study route rather than a certificate.
Editorial note on compatibility
Zhong’s own curriculum is organized independently around Traditional Chinese, Taiwan Mandarin, and TOCFL-oriented levels. Learners may use it alongside Dangdai or another textbook for review, handwriting practice, reading, and audio exposure; the two should not be understood as the same course.
