What Makes A1 Vocabulary Different

Band A1 is where every Mandarin learner begins. These 500 words are the most essential in the language — greetings, numbers, family terms, food, colors, and daily necessities. At this stage, everything is new. Every character, every tone, every grammar pattern is being encountered for the first time, which makes A1 paradoxically the hardest band despite having the fewest words.

  • Complete spoken register — every word is used in face-to-face conversation
  • High-frequency characters that appear in 80% of daily interactions
  • Foundation for all later bands — every Band B and C word builds on A1 characters
  • All vocabulary is concrete and physical — you can see, touch, or point to it
