Dangdai Book 1 Lesson 6: Locations, Directions & Study Guide

Representative terms include 在 (zài, located at/in), 哪裡 (nǎlǐ, where), 附近 (fùjìn, nearby), 旁邊 (pángbiān, beside), and 方便 (fāngbiàn, convenient). These examples are illustrative only.

Grammar priorities

• 在 can function as the location verb or introduce the place where an action occurs.
• Position words such as 前面, 後面, 裡面, and 外面 behave like location nouns.
• Distinguish “something is located somewhere” from “there is something somewhere”; the latter commonly uses 有.
• 這裡, 那裡, and 哪裡 form a useful here/there/where set.
• Practice distance and convenience as complete predicates, not as direct English translations.

Common learner mistakes

Beginners often reverse the reference object and the position word, or use 在 and 有 interchangeably. Draw a simple map and describe it from two directions. Then ask someone else to identify a location from your description.

Study plan

Choose five places in your neighborhood. For each, write where it is, what is beside it, and whether it is convenient. Practice the same information as questions and answers. Add audio review so the position words become recognizable at conversational speed.

Series context

Location language recurs in travel, housing, campus, and daily-life conversations. The important milestone is being able to describe an unfamiliar place, not merely recognize a list of buildings.
